Llewellyn

The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Llewellyn is a small town on Dorrigo Evans’s route to Tom Evans’s home in the snow country behind Ben Lomond. Described as even smaller than Cleveland, it serves less as a destination than as a point of transition: from Llewellyn, Dorrigo leaves the town behind and continues on foot through paddocks and bush toward the mountains.

Setting and Route

At the Fingal Valley turnoff, Dorrigo leaves Joe Pike’s dray and walks to Llewellyn. From there he heads north-east across the paddocks, using the snow-covered massif of Ben Lomond to take his bearings. The journey continues through the bush into the country behind the mountain, where Tom works as a possum snarer.

Narrative Significance

Llewellyn occupies a threshold in the landscape of Dorrigo’s childhood visits: it is the last named town on a journey that leads away from roads and settlement toward Tom’s remote home. Its smallness, explicitly measured against Cleveland, makes the journey’s increasing remoteness legible. The town’s role is brief but distinct—the point from which Dorrigo turns toward the mountain and walks on into the bush.
